LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 - In a landmark agreement, Universal Music Publishing Group today announced the renewal of a long term worldwide publishing administration deal with of one of music's royal elite -- PRINCE. The deal includes administration of Prince's numerous future works and his complete, extensive back catalog of more than 35 albums and compilations including landmark, multi-platinum albums Musicology, 1999, Sign O' The Times, Diamonds and Pearls, Parade, Around the World in a Day, Emancipation, Purple Rain, and Batman -- The Motion Picture Soundtrack. In 2004, the incredible musical genius of Prince continued to reign with the success of what many consider the biggest comeback album of the year, Musicology (NPG/Columbia) and a sold-out tour named Billboard Top Earning Tour of the Year, grossing $90.2 million in ticket sales. Following his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Prince shined in the spotlight again when he opened the 46th annual Grammy awards with a show-stealing duet alongside Beyonce Knowles.In his 20-year lustrous career as a vocalist, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, the Grammy and Oscar-winning artist has fourteen No.1 U.S. singles to his credit (including "1999," "I Wanna Be Your Lover," "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry," "Raspberry Beret," "Kiss," "Sign O' The Times," "Batdance," "Cream," "Gett Off," "Diamonds and Pearls," and more), and twenty-six No.1 single chart positions across the Pop and R&B charts, as well as four No. 1 albums (Purple Rain Soundtrack, Around the World in a Day, Batman, and Diamonds and Pearls) and over 36 Top 10 album positions, Prince is one of the few artists to simultaneously experience a No.1 single ("When Doves Cry"), album (Purple Rain Soundtrack), and movie (Purple Rain). Grammy Award winning R&B superstar Prince is set to headline this years Super Bowl halftime festivities in Miami on Feb. 4. The Super Bowl, which will be televised by CBS, is annually television's highest rated show. According to CNN, an estimated 141 million people watched last year's game between Pittsburgh and Seattle. CBS and the NFL has been taking a more cautious approach when booking artist since Janet Jackson's widely criticized "wardrobe malfunction" at halftime of the 2004 game. Last year, Mick Jagger's microphone was silenced as he sang sexually suggestive lyrics in a couple of songs the Stones performed. Prince gained attention early his career with raunchy lyrics and racy performances, but has toned down his act in recent years.
R&B/Pop star Prince has ordered several fan websites to remove any image that bears his likeness. Internet sites HouseQuake.com, PrinceFams.com and Prince.org have been asked by the pop superstar's lawyers to comply with their demands immediately. The outraged websites, who stand accused of copyright infringement, have now joined forces to form Prince Fans United in protest. A statement on website PrinceFansUnited.com reads: "It is our opinion that these threats are not made in an attempt to enforce valid copyright as Prince alleges in his threats, rather we believe they are attempts to stifle all critical commentary about Prince. "We strongly believe that such actions are in violation of the freedom of speech and should not be allowed. Prince claims that fan sites are not allowed to present any artwork with Prince's likeness, to the extreme that he has demanded the removal of fans' own photographs of their Prince inspired tattoos and their vehicles displaying Prince inspired license plates."
Pop/R&B superstar Prince is slated to publish his first book this fall entitled “21 Nights” according to Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The book is based on 21 sold-out concerts last year at London’s 02 Arena. Further described as a “photographic essay,” “21 Nights” is expected to offer a rare glimpse into the life, lyrics and mystique of the artist through evocative poetry, lyrics to new songs and other selections. Nearly 124 full-color never before published images are expected to be featured in the new book by celebrated photographer Randee St. Nicholas. Adding icing on the cake, “Indigo Nights,” an exclusive CD filled with after-hours jams, will accompany the book.
Stevie Wonder fans got more than they bargained for last night (Nov. 17), as Tony Bennett and Prince made surprise appearances during the R&B legend's sold-out show at New York's Madison Square Garden. It was Wonder's first headlining concert in the city since 1996.
