British R&B singer JAMELIA blames motherhood for forgetting her lyrics onstage. The star hadn't performed live for two years after becoming a full-time mother to young children Teja and Tiani before she took to the stage in London last week. According to reports, she was so nervous she continually forgot the words to her songs. Jamelia says, "I am 100 per cent proof that pregnancy and motherhood make your brain go a bit mad. After having Teja my memory went really bad and after having Tiani I'm just all over the place. "It's not just words I forget, it's birthdays and things like that. I am notorious for forgetting my lines when I sing. I do it practically every live show but I've never had it to the extent I did the other night. I was totally taken over by nerves. Usually if I forget a line or a word or something, the audience would never know, I just carry on, but at that gig I just couldn't. I forgot one word, then I forgot the line and then I forgot the verse - it was like, let's just start again. After probably the fourth time I was so near to tears I was like, 'Oh God, my career's over, I'm never going to sing again.'"
Multi-platinum artist Ashanti filed a federal lawsuit Jan. 27 over the unauthorized release of demos recorded more than eight years ago. Stated by Billboard.com, Ashanti claims she recorded demos for Parker and T.E.A.M. to shop for a major-label deal when she was 16 years old. They failed to land a deal; the artist claims she never intended or authorized them to release the demos as an album. Ashanti alleges invasion of privacy, unfair competition and trademark-related claims for releasing the demos without her permission and using her name and likeness on the albums and in advertising. She asks the court for an injunction, damages to compensate for lost profits and harm to her reputation, and punitive damages in excess of $1 million. "It has long been a sad fact of the music industry that there are a great many people who try to make easy money off of the talent, hard work and success of young recording artists," says Ashanti's current lawyer, William Archer, head of the entertainment practice group at Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith in Los Angeles. "Recording artists are starting to fight back in different ways. That is what we intend to do here." TEAM and Parker could not be reached for comment. Archer says the complaint has not yet been served on the defendants.
R&B superstar Rihanna, who recently became an honorary cultural ambassador for Barbados, is now advocating for another cause: a New York City leukemia patient in urgent need of a bone marrow donor. The 20-year-old singer is working with DKMS, an international donor network based in Tubingen, Germany, to try to find a donor for Lisa Gershowitz Flynn, People magazine reported on its Web site Saturday. "When I heard about Lisa's plight, my heart broke," Rihanna told the magazine. "I said, 'I need to get the word out about Lisa right away.'"Flynn is a 41-year-old mother of two young children. She was diagnosed in November with acute myelogenous leukemia, a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Doctors have told her she has four to six weeks to find a suitable donor, according to People. Flynn said she was stunned by the singer's efforts on her behalf. "For Rihanna to even be thinking about helping others and putting herself out there when she is so busy with her career is tremendous," Flynn said. Rihanna, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, was named an honorary cultural ambassador for her native Caribbean island on Thursday. Earlier this month, she and Jay-Z won a Grammy in the rap/sung collaboration category, for her hit "Umbrella."
The estranged wife of R&B singer R. Kelly refuses to believe her husband is guilty of the alleged child pornography charges against him, even though she hasn't seen the videotape in question. In 2002, R. Kelly was charged with 21 counts of child pornography in connection to a 26 minute tape which prosecutors claim shows him having sex with an underage girl. However, Andrea Kelly insists her husband is not the man in the footage, despite not having seen the tape for herself. She tells Essence Magazine, "C'mon. Who would believe all that? That's why they call them allegations." In the interview, Andrea also hits out at those who are quick to judge her and assume her husband is guilty. She adds, "Oh boy, if you only knew. If you knew what it took to be in (my) position. "I would hope people would take away from this that you can't just look at a women in my position and judge her because of things you perceive in a video or stuff you hear on the street."
R&B/Pop king Michael Jackson will lose his Neverland Ranch in January if he fails to pay a $23 million loan, according to reports. Jackson is on the brink of seeing his infamous home being sold, after being given 90 days to meet a final demand on the huge debt. The Fortress Trust, an investment company, is understood to have issued the ultimatum, which expires on January 19. Although Jackson is said to be nearing agreement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing about a financial deal, this is not thought to involve Neverland. It is reported that Jackson is currently residing in a rented property in Washington.
