2007 welcomes the new inductees into the Rock And Roll Hall of F

Posten on: 2007-01-10 04:56:27

This year's new additions in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be R.E.M., Van Halen, Patti Smith, the Ronettes and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. The ceremony will be held on the March 12 at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. To be eligible for induction, this year's class had to release their first single no later than 1981.The 2007 event will also pay tribute to late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, who served as the chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of R.E.M. said that they were quite pleased to be find themselves in the same class of inductees as Patti Smith, an acknowledged influence on the band who called Stipe today (Jan. 8) to congratulate the band on the Hall of Fame news. "It was really greater to be able to say 'Congratulations to you' back to her," Stipe says. Mills added that, "She's been up (for induction) before and hasn't gotten in. I was afraid that her lack of huge record sales might blind people to her influence."R.E.M. and Van Halen also face the decision of whether to perform at the ceremony with ex-members. R.E.M. reunited with former drummer Bill Berry last fall to celebrate its induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and even hit the studio with him to record a track for an as-yet-unreleased charity album. For Van Halen, the situation is more complex. The group is without a lead singer, although rumors are swirling that original frontman David Lee Roth will tour with the outfit this summer. In addition, Eddie Van Halen's teenage son recently replaced longtime bassist Michael Anthony in the band.Black Sabbath, the Sex Pistols, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blondie, Miles Davis and record moguls Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were enshrined in the Hall in 2006.

Farewell to James Brown

Posten on: 2007-01-03 09:31:44

Friends and relatives of James Brown have gathered for a private memorial service in his hometown. The Godfather of Soul, who died aged 73, on Christmas Day (December 25), was brought into Carpentersville Baptist Church in the same gold casket that was bearing his body at New York's Apollo Theatre on December 28th.Among the guests who paid their respects at the ceremony in Augusta, Georgia were boxing promoter Don King, comedian Dick Gregory and his friend Rev Al Sharpton, who previously accompanied Brown's body to New York.During the ceremony in front of around 300 people, Rev Sharpton said that James Brown should be remembered in life and death for his impact on music and on the world, not for the many people that surrounded him."When he started singing, we were sitting in the back of the bus. When he stopped singing we were flying Lear jets," he added. The 90-minute service also saw several prayers, gospel music, and Brown's favorite hymn, 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow' by Cynthia Moore as mourners clapped, danced, waved their arms and cheered.Several hundred friends, relatives and onlookers also waited outside the small, red brick church in a neighbourhood of dilapidated homes, reports ABC News. The ceremony marked the second day of the singer's final farewell after he died unexpectedly of heart failure caused by severe pneumonia. The singer's body was taken to the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York on Thursday (December 28) to lie in state so fans could pay their respects.Michael Jackson made a rare public appearance at James Brown's funeral on December 30th.The singer paid a special tribute to the Godfather Of Soul as civil rights leaders, fans and a host of stars turned out to pay their respects in front of 8,500 mourners at the James Brown Arena in Augusta, Georgia.Speaking onstage Jackson described the legendary showman as his "greatest inspiration" and he told the crowd how his mother would wake him up to watch Brown on TV."Ever since I was a small child - no more than six-years-old - my mother would wake me no matter what time it was to watch the television to see the master at work," he said. "Every time I saw him move I was mesmerized. I've never seen a performer like JB and right then and there, I knew that was exactly what wanted I to do with my life. James Brown, I shall miss you and I love you so much. Thank you for everything."Jackson, who was greeted with huge cheers when he arrived at the funeral, spoke as Brown lay in an open top gold coffin in his third outfit - a black suit and gloves, red shirt and sequined shoes - in three days.Earlier, the singer was invited to take to the stage for a version of 'Sex Machine' but he decided to stay seated. Sat at the front of the stage Jackson also leaned forward to kiss Brown's forehead before he returned to his seat.As the service began shortly after 1pm (6pm GMT), friends and relatives filed past Brown's funeral before a video of his recent performances in London were projected in front of the crowd. This was followed by a performance from ex-Temptations member Ollie Woodson before Brown's current partner Tomi Rae Hynie sang an emotional 'Hold On I'm Coming'.Later civil rights leader and close friend, Reverend Al Sharpton made a special tribute to the Godfather Of Soul explaining that Brown "was the star for the common people. He looked like us and he performed for us."He then sent out a message to St Peter asking him to "open up the gates of heaven wide because James Brown likes a lot of room to swagger".Long-time friend and manager Charles Bobbit recalled the Godfather of Soul's final hours in hospital describing how he heard him whisper that he was "going away tonight" before sighing three times and dying quietly. Also at the ceremony, which saw thousands of fans queuing outside the stadium from 9pm on Friday (December 29), were civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who along with Sharpton, read out the last rites during the ceremony. MC Hammer and comedian Dick Gregory were also in attendance. Many fans had gathered on the streets to listen to the service over a public address system. The ceremony marked the singer's final day of mourning after Brown died unexpectadly of heart failure caused by severe pneumonia on Christmas Day (December 25).Yesterday a private memorial was held at the Carpentersville Baptist Church in the legendary showman's hometown after fans had paid their respects at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem in New York, the night before.Brown, who was known as the hardest working man in show business, had been due to play in New York's Times Square on New Year's Eve.
