Black Sabbath finally honored into the Rock Hall

Posten on: 2006-01-24 07:31:46

Black Sabbath, the heavy-metal pioneers are finally in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, joined by Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Sex Pistols and Blondie.Ozzy’s 1970s group was first nominated in 1996 but the judges made up of musicians, industry professionals and journalists who vote on inductees kept them out. In fact it was only Led Zeppelin in 1987 that made it in out of the whole hard rock or heavy metal bands. In 1999, Osbourne requested that Black Sabbath be taken off the list of nominees.Black Sabbath was welcomed into the UK Music Hall of Fame this month in its second ceremony. Osbourne celebrated by mooning the audience during a performance of “Paranoid.”Miles Davis, the late trumpeter, is the first jazz musician accepted as a full inductee. Louis Armstrong (1990), Dinah Washington (1993) and Billie Holiday (2000) were previously honored as being early influences on rock ’n’ roll.Davis’ hard glare and restless innovation gave him a style that rockers appreciated, and he embraced rock and hip-hop sounds in his later recordings. The Sex Pistols were a huge hit after only one album, but not until Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious shocked the rock establishment with songs like “God Save the Queen” and “Pretty Vacant.” They inspired waves of imitators in spiky hair and torn clothes, but the rock hall was quicker to recognize peers the Clash, Elvis Costello, Police and Talking Heads, however. The induction of Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd means that requests for “Free Bird” will never go unanswered at the rock hall.Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, who founded A&M records in 1962, will receive a lifetime achievement award in the non-performer category. This year’s class will be inducted at the rock hall’s annual ceremony, scheduled for March 13 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Inductees into the sidemen category will be announced later.Artists are eligible to be inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their first record was released.

Each Famous Song Has A Story

Posten on: 2006-01-19 06:37:02

Pink Floyd still holds the record for having the longest stay of an album on the charts with their release in 1973 of "Dark Side Of The Moon." But their biggest song came a few years later with "Another Brick In The Wall."The track is part of the double album, "The Wall", which was an indictment of mass crowd psychology and the human nature to act as lemmings with little original thought of their own. The song's writer, Roger Waters, felt this type of thinking was ruining the creativity of musical artists. But what about the whole "brick in the wall" reference? The "wall" is used as a metaphor for the band's growing separation from their audience as they became more and more popular. Waters, in particular, was feeling the stress of too much touring, too little sleep and too much attention and adulation from their fans. The stress overcame him one night in Montreal. Roger Waters got upset and spit on a fan in the front row. Later, as he brooded over his fame and where it was taking him, the concept album "The Wall" was born. Ironically though the song's success catapulted Pink Floyd to even greater heights."Another Brick in the Wall" became, quite literally, another brick in the wall separating the band from its audience as it shot to #1 and stayed there for an amazing four weeks in February of 1980.

The Strokes To Be Around For A While

Posten on: 2006-01-11 04:09:57

The music of The Strokes is the result of wild life style, and the late nights and the early mornings they’ve spent making their music in New York City. Their albums make you want to forget who you are, and unlocks the possibilities of what you might want to be.The Strokes are five close friends who began getting together at the Music Building in New York City sometime in 1998 to lay down the and start a rock & roll band. The boys are: vocalist and songwriter Julian Casablancas, Fabrizio Moretti on drums, Albert Hammond on guitar , Nick Valensi also on guitar, and Nikolai Fraiture on bass.Their personalities and styles differ but that also ties them down. They very much enjoy their lifes, dress as in he 1970’s and 80’s, witty, and open minded. All together, they remind you to slow down the fast-paced life which you’ve been living, and exchange it for theirs as they take you into their world for the moment you allow them.In a very short ammount of time of little over a year The Strokes have played the slew of downtown New York City music venues, which have ranged from their small beginning at the now defunct Spiral, and the Luna Lounge. They later moved on to larger and more well established concert scens such as the Mercury Lounge where their talent was spotted by the club’s young booker Ryan Gentles who went on to become the band’s manager. The difficult process of getting their music produced and recorded has been greatly aided by talented producer Gordon Raphael who helpd them record a three-song demo titled The Modern Age. This demo album was picked up by the U.K. label Rough Trade Records, and released, as-is, in January of 2001. Also helped and guiding the band in the studio was JP Bowersock. The Modern Age was met with excitement on both sides of the Atlantic. A sold out tour of small clubs in the U.K. was followed up by national tours in America. The band was so caught up in the excitement from the news circulating around their music that they took the initiative and began to record their first album. The result is the eleven-song LP titled Is This It which RCA will be releasing in the U.S. on September 25.Two songs from the album were released as the single “Hard To Explain” b/w “New York City Cops” in the U.K. in June 2001 by Rough Trade. The single was met with very good reviews by the English press and climbed to number sixteen on the U.K. pop charts. The success was reinforced by sold out sixteen-date U.K. tour, where scalpers were asking for as much as 200 pounds for tickets. The Strokes are signed to RCA Records. Looking at their enthusiasm, you realise they're gonna tour and record for the rest of their lives.

Deep Purple To Return To Their Roots

Posten on: 2006-01-09 08:19:20

Legendary hard rock band Deep Purple will return to the scene of the crime, as it were, this summer. The group is being honored by the Montreux Jazz Festival, which is curently celebrating it's 40th anniversary in 2006. Details are still being worked out, but Deep Purple will be celebrated at a number of events, and there will be a purple theme throughout the festival, which runs from June 30th to July 15th 2006. The band last played the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004.Deep Purple are very familiar with the town of Montreux, Switzerland - they set up shop at The Casino there in December 1971 to record their Machine Head album. The night before the sessions were to begin, Frank Zappa & the Mothers Of Invention played at the Casino, and during the show, an audience member fired a flare gun into the roof, setting the building on fire and burning it to the ground. This is how the anthem "Smoke On The Water was born."As strange as it might seem, Deep Purple really didn't see the potential in "Smoke On The Water." Purple bassist Roger Glover recalls: "Our focus on Machine Head was another song entirely, a song called 'Never Before.' 'Smoke On The Water' was really a sort of, just another track on the album - there was nothing special about it. And 'Never Before' came out and got all the promotional stuff - the industry, you know, went into overdrive to sell that - and nothing happened to it. And it took the public, or possibly the radio stations and the public, to pick 'Smoke On The Water' and say, 'That's the song you should be pushing.'"
